Its spring and I have lots of plans…
I like to say plans because with art you are constantly keeping a journal (written or mental) of the awesome ideas for art projects that run their course through your brain every day. However, if you are like me and are trying to hold down a “day job” to pay the bills and not become a total recluse from friends and family, you don’t always have the time to bring these ideas to fruition.
In order for me to keep the spirit of creativity alive I surround myself with artwork…whether it’s making a trip to an art museum/gallery, keeping a screen saver on my computer of artist’s creations, reading books about art, or visiting the coffee shop that keeps new art filtering through its walls. I also try to keep journals/notebooks everywhere! One in the car, one at work, one on my nightstand, and one at my computer desk…everywhere. It’s important to do this so that you don’t forget that great influence, idea, shape, color, design that will help you release your imagination. A lot of times I feel so burned out from my day-to-day life; and with not having the time to express myself, I feel like I could just explode! This is not always a good thing unless I have the time to take it out on some canvas, paper, or clay!!
As artists we are the expressers, the idealists, the colorists, the designers that shape the visual world, and therefore, we must continue to create! I say even if you are doodling, sketching, writing ideas, recording dreams, do not consider it a lost cause. Keep your journals/notebooks and once you do have free time—dive in to your own book(s)! Rediscover your own creativity! Go outside on the porch, coffee shop or book store, create a still life in your home, and sketch or paint…who cares if it is a masterpiece. The point is exercise. It is just as important for the artist exercise his pencil or paintbrush as it is to get physical exercise every week.
You WILL lose it if you DON’T use it!
